The story is set in the Pride Lands of Africa and begins with the birth of a young lion cub named Simba. He is the son of King Mufasa and Queen Sarabi and is destined to be the future king. The birth of Simba brings great joy to the Pride Lands, except for Mufasa's brother, Scar, who is envious of Simba's position as heir to the throne.

As Simba grows, he forms a close bond with his father, Mufasa, who teaches him important life lessons about the Circle of Life, the delicate balance of nature, and the responsibilities of being king. Simba's best friend is Nala, a young lioness and the daughter of Sarabi and another close friend is Zazu, the king's loyal hornbill advisor.

Scar, seeking to usurp the throne, hatches a plan to kill both Mufasa and Simba. He lures Simba into a gorge where a wildebeest stampede is orchestrated by hyenas under Scar's command. Mufasa rushes to save Simba and successfully rescues him, but he is then betrayed by Scar, who throws Mufasa into the stampede, leading to his tragic death. Scar convinces Simba that he is responsible for his father's death and should flee the Pride Lands, which Simba does in guilt and shame.

In his self-imposed exile, Simba meets Timon, a wisecracking meerkat, and Pumbaa, a carefree warthog. They introduce him to the "Hakuna Matata" philosophy, which means "no worries" in Swahili. Simba grows up with them, living a carefree and worry-free life.

Meanwhile, the Pride Lands fall into decline under Scar's rule. Resources become scarce, and the once-vibrant kingdom becomes a desolate wasteland. Nala, who has grown into a strong lioness, sets out to find help and stumbles upon Simba, who is initially reluctant to return but is convinced by Rafiki, a wise baboon and a shaman.

Simba returns to the Pride Lands, confronts Scar, and reveals the truth about Mufasa's death. A climactic battle ensues, leading to Simba's victory and Scar's defeat. Scar is eventually devoured by his own hyena followers.

Simba reclaims his rightful place as king, and with Nala as his queen, they restore the Pride Lands to their former glory. The Circle of Life is renewed as they present their own cub at Pride Rock, symbolizing hope and a promising future for the Pride Lands.

"The Lion King" is celebrated for its themes of responsibility, self-discovery, and the cycle of life, as well as its memorable characters and iconic music composed by Elton John and Tim Rice.
